Forming an LLC in District of Columbia
Forming an LLC in District of Columbia in 7 easy steps
- The first step is to pick out a good name for your LLC. When forming an LLC in the District of Columbia you are not allowed to use a name that any way implies that your company is organized under an act of Congress. In addition to this, you are not allowed to choose a name violates trademark law or is used by another LLC. The name of your LLC must contain an LLC identifier, such as “Limited Liability Co” or “LLC”.
- You are not required by law to consult an attorney when forming an LLC in the District of Columbia, but it can still be a good idea to let an attorney check your Operating Agreement because unsuitable operating agreements are known to easily cause tax trouble for LLC’s.
- During step three, you visit the D.C. filing office and file your Article of Organization. The minimum filing fee is $150.00. (For 20 business days.)
- During step four, it is time to arrange an Organizational Meeting where the members (owners) of the LLC adopt the Operating Agreement.
- When you have gotten this far in the process, you can apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
- Open up a bank account for the newly formed LLC.
- Obtain any required business licenses and permits.
